Bayt Umm al-Mays
February 25, 2024The village of Sufla was located 18.5 kilometers from Jerusalem and was situated on a ridge extending in an east-west direction. A secondary road connected it to a main road linking Bayt Jibrin—one of the largest villages in the Hebron District—with the Jerusalem–Jaffa highway. Several paths also connected it to other villages in the area.

There is archaeological evidence indicating a former Crusader presence in the village. Sufla was built along the edge of a narrow mountain and had a spring to its southeast. It was classified as a farm in the Index Gazetteer of Palestine. Most of its houses were constructed of stone, with some built in a form resembling caves. As new houses began to be built, the village expanded along the road leading to the neighboring village of Jarash.
Sufla was among the villages captured by Israeli forces at the beginning of Operation Ha-Har in the second half of October 1948. There are no Israeli settlements on the village lands. The ruins of the stone houses are scattered across the site, which has since become grazing land for livestock. Cave-like structures can also be seen at the location.
