Kafra
March 2, 2024Jibbul was situated on a hill at the edge of the Bisan Valley, overlooking the Yabla Valley to the southwest. The Asha Valley extended across its lands to the south. A secondary road connected it to the main Bisan-Ariha road, and other roads linked it to neighboring villages. The site was possibly known during the Roman period as Jibbul, or more likely Jibula. The Crusaders also referred to it as Jibbul, a name possibly derived from the Hebrew word meaning “boundaries.”
In 1596, Jibbul was classified as a farm paying taxes to the government. By the late 19th century, the village lay on low-lying land, with houses constructed of stone and mud. Its layout was circular, with houses surrounded by agricultural lands spreading out like the rays of a circle from its center. A network of alleys radiated from the center, connecting to roads linking the village to others. The inhabitants, all Muslims, had a small mosque topped with a dome located to the south of the houses, along with several shops. The villagers largely depended on Bisan and the nearby village of Kawkab al-Hawa for education, healthcare, commerce, and other services. There was a spring to the east that supplied water. The residents cultivated grains, vegetables, and fruit, relying on rainfall for irrigation. In 1944-1945, a total of 1,367 dunams were allocated for grains, and 5 dunams were irrigated or used for orchards. The nearby highlands served as pastureland for livestock.
The Village Today
The village houses have turned into rubble, now covered by trees, thorns, and wild grass. The surrounding lands remain cultivated.
Zionist Settlements on Village Lands
There are no Israeli settlements on the lands of the village. However, the settlement of Beit Yosef (202218), established in 1937 on the lands of the nearby village of Rub‘a, lies two kilometers to the southeast. Additionally, a farm known as Dushen (201215), established in 1955 on lands belonging to the village of Zib‘a, is located near the village site.
