Ein Hod Colony

Ein Hod is an Israeli artists’ settlement established on the ruins of the depopulated Palestinian village of Ein Hawd. It is located south of Mount Carmel and southeast of Haifa in northern Palestine. The settler population was 559 in 2008 and increased to 664 by 2022. It is registered as a cooperative settlement association, approximately 14 kilometers from the city of Haifa.

Originally, the site was the Arab village of Ein Hawd, whose residents fled during the ethnic cleansing war. After the war, the lands and homes were confiscated, and some displaced Arabs established a neighboring village of the same name—Ein Hawd. The government initially brought immigrants from Algeria to the area; these settlers later left and founded the settlement of Zaruba. In 1953, a group of artists, including Marcel Janco, settled in the homes and established an artists’ village. The village was subsequently designated as a settlement for practitioners in all fields of the arts, including visual arts, music, literature, and theater.

On December 2, 2010, the village was evacuated due to the Carmel Fire, which damaged approximately 40 homes in the settlement.
